Keynote Speeches

The Canadian Aerospace Research and Industry

Joon Chung

Department of Aerospace Engineering, Ryerson University, Toronto, Canada

The year 2009 marks the Centennial of the first flight in Canada, which took place in February 1909 in Baddeck, Nova-Scotia. One hundred years later, aerospace industry still stands among one of Canada’s most promising industrial high-tech sectors. Canada is an important player in the global aerospace industry. In terms of commercial aerospace, we are the world’s fourth-largest producer (after the United States, the United Kingdom and France). Canadian aerospace products and services are competitive in many market segments, including: regional and business aircraft; small gas turbine engines; commercial flight simulators; aerostructures; landing gear systems; helicopters; armoured vehicles; space-based robotics; remote sensing systems and satellites; avionics and mission systems; and, maintenance, repair and overhaul services. Canadian industry is a world leader in many of these segments. It is the passion and tremendous ingenuity of Canadians that has made our nation the outstanding world leader it is today. More than 83,000 highly qualified Canadians from coast-to-coast continue to make aerospace history on a daily basis, and the future looks bright. The aerospace industry is a significant contributor to Canada’s economic performance, with a strong presence in all regions across Canada. The main objective of this presentation is to introduce Canadian aerospace research and industry to general audience.

Nutrition, Obesity and Men’s Reproductive Health

Miyoung Suh

Department of Human Nutritional Sciences, University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Canada

Male reproductive health problems associated with obesity are beginning to receive significant attention in recent years. Poor semen quality and decreased circulating testosterone are more common in obesity. This raises concern about the future of male infertility as obesity among children and adults is increasing. According to Statistics Canada, about 33 percent of adult Canadians are overweight and 15 percent are obese. Despite this evidence, research on male reproductive health is still limited. The testes and sperm contain unique lipid component, which may function in controlling overall testicular function, sperm and testosterone production.  By using biochemical and molecular biology technique, we have recently shown that specific types of dietary fats influence sperm counts, morphology, testosterone production by altering micro-lipid environment of testis and sperm in obese rats. These findings indicate that diet/nutrition is a critical determinant of reproductive potential and will lead to the development of novel therapeutic and non-pharmaceutical strategies for male reproductive health.
