PhD, P.Eng.

Professor, Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering and Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Microcellular Plastics, University of Toronto

 RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT AWARD

Take a look around.  Virtually everywhere we go, foamed plastics surround us.  It is in our homes as insulation, cushions and weather stripping; in our cars as various protective and convenience mechanisms and in the rest of our lives in every form imaginable.

Chul Caleb Park, is a world leader in developing innovative, cost-effective technologies to produce foamed plastics, including microcellular processing, inert gas-injection processing, rotational foam moulding, wood-fibre composites and open-cell foams.  He also directs the Microcellular Plastics Manufacturing Laboratory at the University of Toronto, the world’s leading facility for research and development of microcellular plastic foams.

It was during his work on his PhD that Dr. Park first started looking at foam as central to his career.

“I believe that the foam structure was created by God, not by men,” he says.  “We’re mimicking nature: Wood, bone, cork, coral, Irish leaf –these things show the genius structure of foams.”
